The Becker Bates Mine Central City Colorado
This first gold lode was discovered 700 feet from here on May 6,1859 by John H Gregory of Georgia. 13 days later Captain William Bates, US Army paid Gregory $200 to find the second gold lode then names the Bates lode. Theodore Becker of New York was a business man and bought claims on the Bates starting in 1860. Theodore told his family never to sell the claims. There were three generations starting with Theodore and then his son Henry who passed it on to his son named Theodore Becker after his father. The mine was sold in the 1930's and was operated under various names including The Gregory Bates Mining Company. 4 million ounces of gold were extracted from the ground here and it was nicknamed the "Richest Square Mile On Earth".
